Papaya is a tropical fruit that is either red, yellow or green in color. Papaya trees grow papayas in warm climates and the fruit are actually the size of cantaloupes when they are fully grown. The papaya fruit has soft flesh and black seeds.

Papaya recipes vary by region; papaya may be eaten raw, made into juice, used for baking or cooked in savory dishes. Here in Puerto Rico, it’s especially popular as Dulce de Papaya, or candied papaya.

Papayas are great for making juices and smoothies because the papaya fruit is already soft and sweet and doesn’t require any additional sugar to make it tasty.

This simple papaya juice recipe only needs 3 ingredients:

Enjoy papaya juice on its own or flavor papaya juice by adding lemon, honey or ginger, or make a papaya smoothie!

Benefits of papaya juice

The benefits of drinking papaya juice are many. Papayas contain fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, and the antioxidants lycopene and lutein.

Vitamin C is essential to the body’s production of collagen which is necessary for healthy bones, teeth, gums and blood vessels. Vitamin A is necessary for eye, bone, immune and skin health. It’s also a very powerful antioxidant, and is associated with reduced risk of developing certain types of cancer.

Papaya juice can help also help relieve heart burn and diarrhea; papaya fruit may help with gut health, indigestion and constipation, related to its digestive enzyme, papain.

Papaya seeds offer anti-inflammatory benefits. They may help promote heart health, manage diabetes and improve blood cholesterol levels.

Can you juice a papaya?

Of course! In this recipe, I used my blender and some coconut water to make the juice. The resulting texture is pulpy and creamy. However, if you want a smoother texture, you can strain the juice before serving.

Although you can also use a juicer, but only if you use slightly firm papayas. Ripe papayas are too soft for conventional juice machines.

Papaya juice combinations

You can combine this basic papaya juice recipe with other delicious ingredients. It blends very well with other fruit and fruit juice such as:

  • Orange juice
  • Pineapple juice
  • Mango pulp
  • Lime or lemon juice
  • Sliced starfruit
  • Chopped watermelon

How long does this juice last?

This fresh papaya juice can last up to 3 days in the refrigerator. I also love to freeze any leftover juice in an ice tray and use the cubes in my breakfast orange juice.
